Homer

Homer is the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, two long epic poems in dactylic hexameter, which signify the beginning of European literature. The traditional dates for the composition of the epics are 750 BC. (Iliad) and 725 BC. (Odyssey). Much of the content of the Homeric epics appears to be consistent with the Aegean Late Bronze Age (12^th c. BC.) the time of the Trojan War. Homer is also considered to be the legendary founder of the Homeridae, a guild of rhapsodes who might have composed oral poetry concerning the Mycenaean Age. Various traditions have survived purporting to give details of Homer's birthplace and background. The Iliad suggests a home on the east side of the Aegean Sea and the poet seems familiar with the area. The Ionic flavour of his mixed dialect suits the cities of Ionia on the other side of the Aegean Sea. Chios has the strongest claim to have been his birthplace. Until nowadays Daskalopetra (“The Teacher’s Rock”) is allegedly where Homer is said to have taught his students in Chios.

Όμηρος

Ο Όμηρος είναι ο ποιητής της Ιλιάδας και της Οδύσσειας, των δύο εκτενών επών σε δακτυλικό εξάμετρο, τα οποία αποτελούν την αρχή της Ευρωπαϊκής λογοτεχνίας. Οι παραδοσιακές ημερομηνίες για την σύνθεση των επών είναι 750 π.Χ. (για την Ιλιάδα) και 725 π.Χ. (για την Οδύσσεια). Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του περιεχομένου των Ομηρικών Επών φαίνεται να σχετίζεται με την Ύστερη Εποχή του Χαλκού στο Αγαίο (12ος αι. π.Χ.) που είναι και η περίοδος του Τρωϊκού Πολέμου. Ο Όμηρος θεωρείται επίσης ο θρυλικός ιδρυτής των Ομηρίδων, μιας συντεχνίας ραψωδών που πιθανόν να συνέθεσαν προφορική ποίηση σχετικά με την Μυκηναϊκή Εποχή. Διάφορες παραδόσεις που επεβίωσαν ισχυρίζονται ότι δίνουν λεπτομέρειες για τον τόπο γένησης και το υπόβαθρο του Ομήρου. Η Ιλιάδα προτείνει για πατρίδα του κάποιο μέρος στην Ανατολική πλευρά του Αιγαίου και ο ποιητής φαίνεται να γνωρίζει την περιοχή αυτή. Το Ιωνικό άρωμα της μικτής διαλέκτου του ποιητή ταιριάζει με τις Ιωνικές πόλεις στην απέναντι πλευρά του Αιγαίου. Η Χίος έχει την πρωτοκαθεδρία ως τόπος γένησης του Ομήρου. Μέχρι και σήμερα η Δασκαλόπετρα θεωρείται το μέρος όπου ο Όμηρος δίδαξε σύμφωνα με τον θρύλο τους μαθητές του στη Χίο.
